1. Get on the Water
San Diego is a prime location for beach activities, from surfing to sunbathing to catching the last rays of sun at Sunset Cliffs. Looking for a little more adventure? Consider renting kayaks or a paddleboard to really connect with the ocean! Just a quick drive outside San Diego and you can get an even more adventurous kayak experience by exploring the caves, kelp forests, and protected habitats in the expansive and beautiful La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve.
Really want to immerse yourself in the underwater habitat? Why not try snorkeling with the sharks?
If you are looking for a little more peaceful and relaxing water explorations, we recommend taking the ferry to Coronado Island to escape for the day. You’ve probably driven over the bridge before, but why not mix things up and add a little adventure by catching the ferry across? You’ll see the island in a whole new way when you rent a bike to get around or kayak around the area after taking the short ferry ride across.
2. Get to the Fairway
As the future home of the 2021 U.S. Open Championship, Torrey Pines Golf Course is a prime spot to work on your own golf game. The 36-hole golf course isn’t just perfect for playing -- the views along the way make it an unforgettable golfing experience. When you play the Championship North and South courses, you’ll be treated to breathtaking Pacific ocean and coastal cliffs views throughout your game. There’s a reason these courses have been nicknamed “golfer’s paradise” after all.
3. Take a Guided Tour
If you are looking for something that combines seeing the town with enjoying nightlife, check out the San Diego beer train trolley. You get to enjoy fine quality craft beer in a VIP setting at several local breweries, jumping off and on the trolley along the way to explore some of San Diego’s finest sights and history along the way. More of a wine person? Not to worry, there are some excellent guided walking tours along the beach, paired with fine wines and gourmet food. The leisurely walk is also filled with plenty of beautiful ocean scenery to appreciate with every sip. You can experience VIP tastings of premium wines and foods all while getting to experience San Diego culture in a whole new way -- as well as discover some tucked away gems of the local area.
4. Find the Best Views
San Diego is full of epic landscapes and scenic views. Spend a few hours hiking to Potato Chip rock and you will be rewarded with some beautiful vistas and some pretty cool photos of the unique rock formation. Already conquered this popular local hike? Consider getting some air for even more epic views. You can learn to paraglide or tandem paraglide with an instructor at Torrey Pines Gliderport, experiencing some of California’s most beautiful terrain from a bird’s eye view. Sounds like too extreme of an adventure? Opt for a nice lunch at the Cliffhanger Cafe instead, which sits atop the sea cliffs of Torrey Pines. Enjoy a sunset dinner with absolutely stunning views of the ocean on the horizon -- you may even be able to spot some whales. You can also enjoy watching the paragliders and hang gliders launch out from this point, getting a little taste of the action. Go during the right time of year and you may even be treated to live music from a local band on the weekend!
5. Get Close to Nature
Camping is a great way to experience the serenity of this region. Though the city is crawling with people and full of exciting events, getting out into nature allows you to experience the beauty of the region with deeper appreciation. While there are plenty of outdoor activities accessible in San Diego and nearby, nothing quite compares to sleeping under the stars in a wild setting -- that’s what makes the California Overland Desert Excursions in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park so unique. There are a variety of offroading tour options, from several hours to overnight adventures. With the overnight option, you get to experience what has been hailed as a “stargazer’s paradise” after a nice off-road ride to some great overlook spots, with plenty of nature sightseeing along the ride. The experience includes gourmet food, a pre-set up camp spot, telescope viewing of the beautiful night sky, s’mores by the campfire, and a hot breakfast in the morning before heading back to the busy city bustle. Opting for one of the shorter, day excursions still gives you plenty of time to enjoy the expansive beauty of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, with your off-roading vehicle doing most of the leg work for you!
